NI partners with the 2021 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, ensuring their riders & crew stay online as they compete across Europe.

 The challenge

For any aspiring Grand Prix motorcycle racer, the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup is the premier platform to launch your career. In the summer of 2021, the Rookie riders, who are typically between the ages of 13 to 16 years old, competed throughout Europe for the 15th season of the Rookies cup.

Whenever crowds gather, the demand for connectivity follows suit with so many people connecting to a single network. At each event throughout the Red Bull Rookies tour, pop-up energy stations are built for the crews and riders to kick back and recharge their batteries, both physically and electronically. This space is designed to eat, relax, network, and work online – most of which requires a stable connection to the internet.

The Rookies Cup travels through Europe’s Grand Prix circuit, so arranging separate data contracts with various providers at each racetrack would be a logistical nightmare, not to mention costly. Leading up to the 2021 season, the Red Bull Rookies and their crew determined that they needed always available connectivity from one provider, ensuring they could go about their general day to day business communications from anywhere.

Peter Clifford, Director of Rider Development and Media, commented: “The Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup takes place at World Championship Grand Prix across Europe, and we rely on the very best companies to help us develop future World Champions.”

THE SOLUTION

Following the success of working with Network Innovations in previous seasons, the Red Bull Rookies, once again, turned to them for a solution. To ensure the Rookie riders and crew had a resilient, mission critical network connection to power their communications, Network Innovations sponsored the 2021 tour.

A ruggedized mobile solution was deployed on the team’s pop-up energy station. The solution consisted of three pieces, a Cobham EXPLORER VSAT antenna, an integrated Peplink MAX HD2 Mobile Router, and remote monitoring software. The auto-deploy EXPLORER terminal provided continuous communications in all conditions, and when integrated with the MAX HD2, supplied a seamless hybrid connectivity service. Using PepVPN technology from Peplink, the mobile router was able to bond multiple connections to produce a bigger, more resilient connection. Cellular, Wi-Fi, and satellite links could be set with different priorities to maximize data through-put over the most efficient, cost-effective links.

To ensure bandwidth speeds were delivering how they should, the team at Network Innovations remotely monitored and controlled connectivity performance for each race on the circuit.

The technology provided a data connection to update social media, view race performance playbacks, cruise the internet, and send digital communications. The solution travelled alongside the riders as they moved venues, ensuring 99.9% network availability.

The importance of crew morale and welfare was also a top priority for Red Bull. Not only could the riders and crew ensure communication between their audience and colleagues, but they could also connect with loved ones throughout the many months away from home.

THE result

The Red Bull Rookies went on to have a sensational season, competing on world famous racing circuits in Germany, Spain, Italy, and more. The tour wrapped up in Aragon, with rider, David Alonso, taking both the title and a KTM motorcycle to enjoy.

Network Innovations provided a solution for a fast and mobile data connection, ensuring network availability for crew welfare, marketing and social media, and general business communications. During their successful tour around Europe, the Red Bull Rookies had peace of mind that they could access the internet, regardless of the terrain, location, or network congestion.

“GP events can swamp local telecom networks, but the Hybrid Data Solution allows us to rise above any such problem.” – Peter Clifford, Director of Rider Development and Media

The next generation of Rookie riders are keen to get started in the 16th season of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, commencing in April 2022. Network Innovations wish this lightening-speed team the best of luck in their future races and have had great pleasure in helping them Succeed. Anywhere. throughout 2021.
