Few people celebrate their 80th birthday with a multi-day trek through one of Africa’s toughest terrains - but then again, few people are quite like John Peck. A lifelong adventurer, guide and inspiration to many, John continues to prove that age is no barrier when passion and preparation come together.
For several years, we have supported adventure coach John Peck as he tackled the toughest expeditions in the world. He has long loved visiting Namibia, and for his 80th birthday, he decided to take on his favourite challenge – The Naukluft Trail. Not only that, but he continued to climb one of the highest sand dunes in the world immediately after.
Equipped with an Iridium Extreme 9575 satellite phone and freshly topped-up airtime, John, along with his sons and friends, was able to enjoy the trek without worrying about staying connected in such a remote area. A fulfilling achievement made better with great company.
Reflecting on the journey, John said:
“I have for many years been captivated by the mountain wilderness of Namibia, and with the support of Network Innovations, I have visited it many times with groups. So, it was decided that to celebrate my 80th birthday, I would return for one last bash whilst I was still fit enough to do so. Supporting me on the trek were two of my sons, now in their 40s and 50s, and a handful of good friends.
The trail was as challenging as I remembered it, and I was grateful that I had my boys with me to help carry some of the loads. They kept a close eye on me – particularly on the more perilous steep descent sections where a slip could be fatal. In those moments, the roles felt reversed – the sons became the father, and the father became the son. It reminded me of trekking with my own father many years ago at a similar age. The experience left me feeling completely embraced and supported throughout the journey.
What was equally supportive throughout the trek was knowing we could stay connected. As always, I’m hugely grateful to the Network Innovations team for providing airtime for our satellite phones. In these remote and rugged environments, reliable communication can literally be a lifesaver! I am sure there will be many more adventures ahead of me in my early eighties, but my greater happiness is seeing my boys stretch their wings and prepare to take their own children on adventures.”
